This weekend saw the resurgence of the summer box office. “The Karate Kid” remake starring Jaden Smith (Will and Jada Smith’s son) and Jackie Chan propelled box office sales that had been poor in the past few weeks. According to EW.com, the underdog story made box office totals 11 percent higher than this time last year when blockbusters “The Hangover” and “Up” were in theaters.

It was the weekend of remakes as both “Kid” and “A-Team” opened. But it was “The Karate Kid” that claimed victory, dominating the macho ’80s television adaptation. ”Kid” grossed an estimated $56 million while “A-Team” earned $26 million.

“Shrek Forever After” dropped to third place after four weeks in the top spot, taking in another $15.8 million.

Rounding out the top five were “Get Him to the Greek” and “Killers,” earning $10.1 million and $8 million respectively.
