It’s no surprise that Pixar’s “Toy Story 3″ opened this weekend to record-breaking box office sales. According to EW.com, the long-awaited third installment in the franchise grossed an estimated $109 million in its opening weekend, making it Pixar’s biggest opening weekend. The movie also boosted the box office up 30 percent from this time last year, when Sandra Bullock’s “The Proposal” premiered and blockbuster hit “The Hangover” was still in theaters.

Last week’s winner, “The Karate Kid,” fell to second place, but is still doing well, earning another $29 million even while facing competition from “Toy Story 3″ for the family demographic group. The remake’s success has already spawned a sequel.

The other recent remake, “The A-Team,” took third place, while “Get Him to the Greek” and “Shrek Forever After” came in fourth and fifth, respectively.

The weekend’s biggest flop was the Josh Brolin and Megan Fox comic anti-hero movie “Jonah Hex.” The movie opened this weekend at only $5 million.
