Earlier this year, Columbia Pictures cancelled “Spider-Man 4″ and decided to film a prequel instead. Since then, Hollywood has been abuzz with suggestions for who to cast as the new Spider-Man. According to the Hollywood Insider, a new Spider-Man has finally been cast and the big news is that he’s British! 26-year-old Andrew Garfield is set to portray the superhero made famous by Tobey Maguire.

The new Spider-Man is a relatively unknown figure in the United States, but is a star to watch in the U.K. Currently, Garfield is working on the Facebook movie “Social Network” starring opposite Justin Timberlake. He’s also filming “Never Let Me Go” opposite leading actresses Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley.

Some of the Twitterers seem to be a tad apprehensive with a new Spider-Man, but the majority are supportive:
