According to Entertainment Weekly, the sleeper alien action flick “District 9″ proved you don’t need big names to bring in big bucks at the box office. 

Directed by newcomer Neill Blomkamp, and produced by Peter Jackson, “District 9″ pulled in $37 million over the weekend, despite a cast of unknowns and a meager budget.

 ”G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra” landed in second place with $22.5 million while “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, found its way into the top three with $19.2 million.

The next-generation “Brat Pack” is in the making – if ABC has anything to say about.

According to THR.com, the network has landed a deal to create an hour-long television series based on the 1985 movie, “St. Elmo’s Fire,” which starred several original ”Brat Pack” members, including Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham. 

The series, set to be produced by filmmaker Joel Schumacher and Topher Grace of “That 70’s Show,” will use the movie as a takeoff point to introduce six new friends: three boys and three girls. 

“It’s the feeling of that time in your life when everything is possible but you can’t figure out how to make it possible,” Grace said.

Fans of the original brat pack are not on board:

According to Entertainment Weekly, Comedy Central’s “Reno 911″ has been canceled after six seasons.

The news was announced via a tweet by the show’s star and co-creator, Thomas Lennon, who said, “Reno 911! was cancelled at 1:30 pm today. Won’t be wearing the shorts again.”

TLC’s “Jon and Kate Plus 8″ returned to the air last night with back-to-back episodes that focused on post-divorce life in the Gosselin home. 

According to Entertainment Weekly, “the first episode included a solo-parent Kate taking the kids on a trip to a beach resort while…Jon Gosselin was back in their Pennsylvania home ’supervising’ the installation of new cabinets.”  The second episode was “entirely Jon-less [and] all about the kids camping in the backyard with Kate.”

Despite less-than-stellar reviews, writer-director Judd Apatow had the last laugh this weekend as his latest  film, “Funny People,” starring Adam Sandler, captured the number one spot at the box office and brought in $23.4 million, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Unfortunately the victory wasn’t enough to overshadow the fact that it was Sandler’s worst opening since his 2000 flop,  ”Little Nicky,” or that it earned less than Apatow’s last film, “Knocked Up.”

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” came in second with $17.7 million, bringing its grand total to $255.5 million. The guinea pig-starring “G-Force” wiggled its way into third with $17.1 million.  The movie came in first last week.

Following a media-frenzied month-long hiatus, TLC’s “Jon and Kate Plus 8″ returns tonight amid speculation about the show’s future.

Since announcing their plans to divorce last month, Jon and Kate Gosselin have faced quite a few life changes, all under the camera’s watchful eye.  Now audiences will have a chance to see those changes reflected in the show.

According to EW.com, the show has done away with interviewing Jon and Kate together on the couch, choosing instead to record confessional-style interviews in separate chairs.

Referencing Jon’s new bachelor life, TLC General Manager and President, Eileen O’Neill said, “As far as new people and places that may be cycling into Jon and Kate’s lives, we’re taking it on a case-by-case basis,” reports PEOPLE.com.

O’Neill also promised that the network “will continue to capture this family’s journey in a sincere and sensitive way.”

Though he may seem an unlikley music star, Pope Benedict XVI has signed a major record deal with Geffen Records, whose artists include Snoop Dogg and Ashlee Simpson.

According to USA Today, the pope will release “Alma Mater,” featuring chants and prayers to the Virgin Mary along with eight original classical compositions, on Nov. 30.

A portion of the profits from sales will support music education for underprivileged children around the world.

According to the Financial Times, Apple is working with the four largest record labels to stimulate digital sales of albums, giving music fans access to new interactive booklets, sleeve notes and other features with music downloads.

The project, reportedly called “Project Cocktail,” aims to change consumer buying trends on iTunes.

Ben Silverman, the co-chairman of NBC Universal Entertainment, announced today that he is leaving the company to start up a new venture with media mogul Barry Diller and IAC.

According to CNNMoney, “the company will unite producers, creators, advertisers and distributors under one roof and produce all forms of content for distribution across a variety of platforms around the world.”

In response to questions about his continued relationship with NBC, Silverman said, “I am invested in what happens in the fall, and they are invested in my helping with the transition.”

Silverman is executive producer of “The Office” and “Ugly Betty,” co-creator and executive producer of “The Biggest Loser,” and executive producer and co-creator of the “The Tudors” on Showtime.
