“American Idol” Lowers Minimum Age

Soon there may be more “American Idol” hopefuls being driven to auditions by their parents. CNN.com reports that the reality competition show has lowered the minimum age for contestants from 16 to 15.

The show’s executives are saying that they want to give younger, talented performers a chance as well. This change will go into effect when Season 10 auditions start on July 17 in Nashville.

The once highly rated show showed a slipping in ratings this past season. This lowered age minimum may attract more younger fans and boost the show’s viewership.

Tweeps, including Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks, are discussing the pros and cons of this change.

Ellen DeGeneres Starts Her Own Record Label

Oprah might have a magazine and a network, but Ellen DeGeneres has something that “The Queen of Daytime” doesn’t: a record label.

The talk show host announced Tuesday that she has started her own record label, eleveneleven, and will use her show as a platform to find more new talent, reports ABCNews.com. DeGeneres has already signed her first artist: YouTube sensation Greyson Chance, the kid who is known for his rendition of Lady Gaga’s hit, “Paparazzi.” Chance, only 12 years old, has also written and composed some original material that was also posted on YouTube.

DeGeneres said in a statement released Tuesday that Chance “inspired” her into creating eleveneleven, which will be a joint venture with Telepictures Productions.

Along with her daytime show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, DeGeneres recently joined American Idol this past season as a judge, filling Paula Abdul’s vacant spot.

New “American Idol,” Farewells to Simon

A new “American Idol” was crowned Wednesday night in a finale that was also a tribute to departing judge Simon Cowell, reports People.com. Illinois native Lee DeWyze won over Ohio musician Crystal Bowersox to become the ninth “American Idol.”

Most of the live finale was dedicated to Cowell, perhaps the most notable “Idol” judge known for his harsh criticisms, who first announced that he would be leaving the show back in January. Seven out of the eight previous “American Idols” and many of the show’s other alumni returned and performed to bid farewell to Cowell, as did artists like Christina Aguilera, Alanis Morissette, Janet Jackson and the still-recovering Bret Michaels.

Former judge Paula Abdul, who left the show after its eighth season and was replaced by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, was also present to give a few words about her former co-judge. There is no word yet as to who will replace Cowell.

While the Twitterverse was split about the winner, most felt that Cowell will be missed and that the show will not be the same without him. It was Jackson, however, who captured tweeps’ attention at the finale.

“American Idol” Down to Two Finalists

After a long and arduous journey, “American Idol” finally picked its finalists for the grand finale that will air next week. The two finalists are Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox, which means that Casey James was sent home from the competition this week, People.com reports.

The episode also showcased the singing talents of Travis Garland, a triple-threat act discovered by Perez Hilton, and teen sensation Justin Bieber as they both performed their own songs to fill in the time before the contestants (and America) got their results.

The hour also showed the contestants’ trips home to their respective families, where they met fans who made their voices known on how proud they were of the finalists.

Big Mike Gets The Big Save On “American Idol”

Tonight’s elimination episode of “American Idol” was the most exciting of the season so far, with Michael “Big Mike” Lynche eliminated, only to then receive the one and only “judges’ save.” The studio audience burst into a deafening cheer at this surprising save.

Tuesday night, the “American Idol” Top 9 contestants performed songs from the Lennon-McCartney songbook. Lynche’s version of “Eleanor Rigby” was deemed too theatrical by Simon Cowell. The other four judges, however, loved it, with Randy Jackson comparing it to something from the hit TV show “Glee.” Still, Lynche ended up in the bottom three with Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly.

After a powerful performance of Maxwell’s “This Woman’s Work,” the judges decided to give “Big Mike” a pardon. When Cowell told Lynche, “See you next week,” Twitter exploded with reactions to the save, with “Big Mike” becoming the number two trending topic for an hour after the show. Most fans were tweeting their support for Big Mike and joy over the decision to keep him another week, though some are questioning if the judges should have held onto the save for another performer.

Last night on “American Idol,” Lacey Brown was sent home, leaving only 11 contestants vying for the title of this year’s “American Idol”. Some “Idol” fans were tweeting their sadness at Brown’s departure, but Ke$ha’s questionable performance got more buzz, with even child actor Frankie Muniz chiming in:

“American Idol” Top 12 Announced, Some Surprising Eliminations

“American Idol” revealed its Top 12 last night, leaving many viewers shocked by some of the contestants who were missing from the lineup. Todrick Hall, Katelyn Epperly, Lilly Scott and Alex Lambert were all sent home, and on Twitter, “Idol” fans have been voicing their disappointment, especially about Scott and Lambert’s departures. Some are even trying to use retweets to get Scott, an early favorite who seemed surprised to be voted off last night, back on the show as a wild card.

Tonight on “American Idol,” two girls will be sent home along with two guys. “American Idol” Down to 16

Tonight, America sent four “Idol” contestants home: gospel singer Jermaine Sellers, Shania Twain’s beloved John Park, R&B-styled Michelle Delamor and country-singing 16-year-old Haeley Vaughn.

“Idol” fans were tweeting their opinions about the two guys and two girls eliminated, with “American Idol” still trending long after the show. Some noticed that all the contestants kicked off were minorities. Others lamented the departure of their favorite singer, while still others were tweeting their disappointment over the caliber of talent on the show:

It’s Guys vs. Girls on “American Idol”

On “American Idol” this week, its been guys against girls, with the ten male contestants performing on Tuesday night and the ten female hopefuls following on Wednesday.

Originally, the girls were set to go first, but when an unspecified illness put contestant Crystal Bowersox in the hospital, the two groups switched nights. Although both the guys and girls had stronger performances than last week, the judges honed in on rough spots for many contestants on both nights, leaving the Twitterverse debating which sex fared better:
