King of the world and now king of America! According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron’s “Avatar” broke the domestic box office record by earning $601.1 million. The previous record of $600.8 million was set in 1998 by Cameron’s other blockbuster film, “Titanic.”

The sci-fi flick’s latest achievement came after box office receipts for Tuesday were totaled, the same day the film garnered nine Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Last month “Avatar” bested the global box office record, which was also previously held by ‘Titanic.” Without adjusting for inflation, the film is considered to be the highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide and now in America as well. The Hollywood Reporter also notes tickets for 3-D films cost more and regular ticket prices have risen since “Titanic” was in theaters.

The late “King of Pop” is scheduled to receive another tribute from the entertainment world–this time in 3-D. The salute will take place at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards on Jan. 31, reports PEOPLE.

Viewers will be shown a 3-D film clip Jackson made before his death. The tribute will include a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy as well as performances from Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, Carrie Underwood and Usher.

The integration of the clip will make the 2010 Grammys the first awards show to include 3-D. Target stores across the nation are distributing 3-D glasses necessary to watch for free.

According to MTV.com, renowned filmmakers James Cameron and Peter Jackson have plans to convert some older films into 3-D now that the technology needed has become more available in theatres.  They first revealed the projects during a Comic-Con panel last Friday.

Cameron said he is working on a 3-D version of the 1997 film “Titanic,” which would relaunch on the big screen sometime in 2011, Cinematical.com reported.

Jackson discussed converting his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy to 3-D as well, but Warner Bros. is hesitant for now, stating that there aren’t enough 3-D screens yet.
