Nominees for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning.

“Avatar” and ”The Hurt Locker” led the nominations with nine each. Interestingly enough, the two contenders were directed by ex-spouses James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow. Both films received Best Picture and Best Director nominations.

The biggest change in the nominations was the expansion of the Best Picture category, which now has 10 nominees instead of five. The directors of three other Best Picture nominees, “Up in the Air,” ”Inglourious Basterds,” and “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” are also up for Best Director. The other nominees for Best Picture are “District 9,” “The Blind Side,” “An Education,”  and “A Serious Man.” Pixar’s “Up” also received a nod and is the category’s only animated nominee.

For Best Actor, the five nominees were Jeff Bridges (”Crazy Heart”), George Clooney (”Up in the Air”), Colin Firth (”A Single Man”), Morgan Freeman (”Invictus”), and Jeremy Renner (”The Hurt Locker”).

Sandra Bullock (”The Blind Side”), Helen Mirren (”The Last Station”), Carey Mulligan (”An Education”), Gabourey Sidibe (”Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire”) and Meryl Streep (”Julie & Julia”) all received nominations for Best Actress.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made headlines in the months leading up to the voting and nomination announcement, when they added new members (among them Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway) and eliminated past winner Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story” from their so-called pre-nominations for the documentary category. The Michael Jackson “This Is It” documentary wasn’t submitted for the category and had a chance at a Best Picture nomination but didn’t garner one–or any, for that matter.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited more than a dozen actors, directors and writers to become members, giving them voting power for the Oscars.

Among those now eligible, according to The Hollywood Reporter: Amy Ryan, Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Dustin Lance Black, Danny Boyle and Tyler Perry.
