Crisis averted! The Hollywood sign, the age-old symbol of the entertainment industry, has been rescued from the sticky clutches of land developers by none other than Playboy founder Mr. Hugh Hefner, who forked over a hefty $900,000 to save the landmark that he says “represents Hollywood dreams,” People.com reports. Back in 1978 Hefner had also donated to help repair the sign.

The towering white-lettered icon and 138 acres of land behind it had been the planned area for a new crop of luxury mansions. Before the developers could take over, however, a nonprofit land conservation group was given the chance to save the sign. The price? Oh, a measly $12.5 million.

Hefner said he knew the nonprofit group was trying to raise the money, but the decision to fork over the $900 grand came when he got wind that the group was short on both money and time: with about a week and  a half to go before the April 30 deadline, the group still needed nearly $1 million.

With her daughter Bristol to star in ABC Family’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” later this year, it was only fitting that ex-Alaskan governor Sarah Palin would find her own spot on television. The former vice-presidential candidate is teaming up with well-known reality show producer Mark Burnett (”Survivor,” “The Apprentice”) to pitch her own docudrama in Hollywood this week, Entertainment Weekly.com reports.

Palin has been seen leaving  ABC, Fox and CBS this week and she still plans to meet with NBC to pitch her idea for a “planet-Earth type look” of her home state of Alaska.

Comic book fans we know you’re excited! Deadline Hollywood is reporting that there are at least six possible candidates to play Captain American in the 2011 film, “The First Avenger: Captain America.”

The outlet says Marvel Studios along with director Joe Johnston are screen-testing testing the following contenders: Michael Cassidy, Chace Crawford, John Krasinki, Scott Porter, Patrick Flueger and Mike Vogel. The first four all had relatively high-profile TV appearances on “The O.C.” (and “Privileged”), “Gossip Girl,” “The Office” and “Friday Night Lights,” respectively, while the last two appeared in the relatively well-known feature films “Brothers” and “Cloverfield,” respectively.

The film will tell the story of Steve Rogers, is a former military man who takes part in a research project that inevitably turns him into a superhero who protects America. Whoever lands the role must sign on for future films, which includes sequels and other Marvel projects.

After more than a decade as one of Hollywood’s A-list actresses, Sandra Bullock has begun a new chapter in her career with an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role as Leigh Anne Tuohy in the football drama “The Blind Side.” But MTV.com reports that the Oscar isn’t the only nomination Bullock received this week. She is also up for a Razzie award in the Worst Actress category for her ditzy role in “All About Steve.”

Pulling off both nominations is a rare and perhaps bittersweet feat but, as Entertainment Weekly declared in December, Bullock is having “the best year of her career.” Both “The Blind Side” and “The Proposal” were box office hits, offsetting the “All About Steve” dud.

Last night Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham served as a guest judge on “America Idol” for the time this season, this time in Denver. The talent was spotty, with a few standouts, and hopefuls who got through were primarily commended for their good looks. Twitterville has been taking Beckham to task for judging the contestants for their appearances, not their performance, and some are even making snide remarks about the singer’s own appearance.

The highest paid couple in Hollywood last year was music moguls Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z, Entertainment Weekly reports. The couple earned $122 million between June 2008 and June 2009, which put them in the number 1 spot on Forbes Magazine’s Top Earning Couples list. This is the couple’s second year in the top spot.

According to Forbes, Knowles brought in $87 million last year while Jay-Z made $35 million. The couple’s profits come from music, endorsements, tours and clothing lines. They married in 2008.

MTV’s “The Real World” will return to New Orleans for its 24th season, the Orlando Sentinel reports.  The show’s executive producer, Jon Murray, stated he hopes the show can help the city come back to life from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

The show previously filmed there for its ninth season, which aired in 2000. Other reused locations include New York City and Los Angeles/Hollywood.

“Friends” star Matt LeBlanc has signed on to play himself in a new Showtime comedy series, TV Guide Magazine reports. This will be his first foray into television since 2006.

The new show,  “Episodes,” will be developed “Friends” creator David Crane and “Mad About You” creator Jeff Klarik. Since the show will be co-produced by the BBC, it will be shot in both London and Hollywood.

The upcoming Sacha Baren Cohen film “Bruno” has gotten wrapped up in the hysteria surrounding Michael Jackson’s death, EW.com reports.

The trouble began when fans could not see Jackson’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last night due to the Los Angeles premiere of the film.  Then, right before the movie began, the filmmakers made a last-minute edit to remove a scene featuring Jackson’s sister, LaToya Jackson.

In the scene, Bruno “interrogated her about her brother Michael and tried surreptitiously to find Michael’s number on her cellphone.”  It’s unclear if the clip will make it back into the film before it opens in theaters July 10.
