Oscar Nominees Announced, “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker” Lead

Nominees for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning.

“Avatar” and ”The Hurt Locker” led the nominations with nine each. Interestingly enough, the two contenders were directed by ex-spouses James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow. Both films received Best Picture and Best Director nominations.

The biggest change in the nominations was the expansion of the Best Picture category, which now has 10 nominees instead of five. The directors of three other Best Picture nominees, “Up in the Air,” ”Inglourious Basterds,” and “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” are also up for Best Director. The other nominees for Best Picture are “District 9,” “The Blind Side,” “An Education,” and “A Serious Man.” Pixar’s “Up” also received a nod and is the category’s only animated nominee.

For Best Actor, the five nominees were Jeff Bridges (”Crazy Heart”), George Clooney (”Up in the Air”), Colin Firth (”A Single Man”), Morgan Freeman (”Invictus”), and Jeremy Renner (”The Hurt Locker”).

Sandra Bullock (”The Blind Side”), Helen Mirren (”The Last Station”), Carey Mulligan (”An Education”), Gabourey Sidibe (”Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire”) and Meryl Streep (”Julie & Julia”) all received nominations for Best Actress.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made headlines in the months leading up to the voting and nomination announcement, when they added new members (among them Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway) and eliminated past winner Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story” from their so-called pre-nominations for the documentary category. The Michael Jackson “This Is It” documentary wasn’t submitted for the category and had a chance at a Best Picture nomination but didn’t garner one–or any, for that matter.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited more than a dozen actors, directors and writers to become members, giving them voting power for the Oscars.

Among those now eligible, according to The Hollywood Reporter: Amy Ryan, Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Dustin Lance Black, Danny Boyle and Tyler Perry.

Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig to Appear on Broadway

Forget Hollywood; these two hotties are headed for the stage, says NYPost.com. The men will star together in a new play on Broadway this fall.

Daniel Craig, known for his portrayal of James Bond in the franchise’s two most recent movies, and Hugh Jackman, most recently seen in “Wolverine,” will play cops in”A Steady Rain,” a drama about two Chicago police officers whose lifelong friendship is put in jeopardy when their involvement in a domestic dispute tests their relationship.

While this will be Craig’s first time on the New York stage, Jackman is a Broadway veteran and Tony Award winner for his role in 2004’s “The Boy from Oz.”

Jackman Flexes Box Office Muscle as “Wolverine”

Marking the arrival of the summer movie season, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” delivered big numbers at the box office this weekend, grossing an estimated $87 million.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Hugh Jackman’s much anticipated “Wolverine” overcame critics’ mixed reviews to claim the top spot. But despite its strong showing, the film fell short of 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand,” which brought in over $100 million in its opening weekend.

Matthew McConaughey’s romantic comedy, “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” followed a distant second with an estimated $15.3 million. Beyonce’s thriller movie “Obsessed” held its own for the second weekend in a row, raking in an estimated $12 million.

As usual, mixed reviews dominated the Twitterverse:

Wolverine Backs Down in Face of Swine Flu

Even a superhero with extraordinary healing powers is taking extra precautions when it comes to the recent swine flu outbreak. The Mexico City premiere of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” has been postponed after more than 100 people in Mexico have died from swine flu. According to People.com, a rep for Twentieth Century Fox says, “We were not only concerned about Hugh [Jackman]’s welfare – and we would never send anyone into harm’s way – but we also have an enormous office filled with people we care about. There was no point in proceeding with the current conditions.”
