A new “American Idol” was crowned Wednesday night in a finale that was also a tribute to departing judge Simon Cowell, reports People.com. Illinois native Lee DeWyze won over Ohio musician Crystal Bowersox to become the ninth “American Idol.”

Most of the live finale was dedicated to Cowell, perhaps the most notable “Idol” judge known for his harsh criticisms, who first announced that he would be leaving the show back in January. Seven out of the eight previous “American Idols” and many of the show’s other alumni returned and performed to bid farewell to Cowell, as did artists like Christina Aguilera, Alanis Morissette, Janet Jackson and the still-recovering Bret Michaels.

Former judge Paula Abdul, who left the show after its eighth season and was replaced by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, was also present to give a few words about her former co-judge. There is no word yet as to who will replace Cowell.

While the Twitterverse was split about the winner, most felt that Cowell will be missed and that the show will not be the same without him. It was Jackson, however, who captured tweeps’ attention at the finale.

In what was expected to be a tight race for the top of the Box Office, it turns out the competition wasn’t even close. Initial reports claimed “Date Night” and “Clash of the Titans” were in a too-close-to-call contest; some even claimed “Date Night” the victor. When the final results came in, however, “Clash of the Titans” reigned supreme, beating out “Date Night” by more than $1 million per EW.com. “Titans” earned $26.6 million and “Date Night” made $25.2 million.

Coming in third was Dreamworks’ “How to Train Your Dragon,” which earned $25.4 million in its third weekend. “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too” took the fourth spot earning $11 million and “The Last Song” rounded out the top five with $10.1 million according to USA Today.

During an “In the Spotlight” interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, singer Janet Jackson revealed that her family was aware of the late Michael Jackson’s drug addiction, ABCNews.com reports.

Jackson stated that the family staged several interventions with Michael, but were ultimately unsuccessful.  While she believes Michael knew these interventions were out of love, she said Michael was in denial about his drug problem.

Jackson also stated during her interview that she believes Michael’s doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray, is responsible for his death as he was the one who prescribed and gave Michael his medications, PEOPLE.com reports.  Jackson added that she believes Murray should never be allowed to practice again.

In response to Michael’s new movie, “This Is It,” Jackson said that she won’t see it for a while–if ever–because it is too painful to see images of her brother so soon after his death.

According to a press release from MTV, the MTV Video Music Awards– which airs Sunday, September 13 at 9pm EST–will feature a much-sought-after trailer: “This Is It,” the Michael Jackson documentary that chronicles the last 3 months of his life.

“This Is It” depicts Jackson getting ready for his 50 sold-out London shows at the O2 Arena and will reportedly show a side of Jackson that no one had seen in a decade.

In addition to the “This Is It” trailer premiere, Jackson’s sister Janet will open the awards show with a tribute performance to her older brother.

The Twitterverse is heavily anticipating this event, and MTV is looking to get the highest ratings ever for the VMAs in the wake of this major loss to the music industry.

MTV has announced that Sunday’s Video Music Awards will begin with a tribute performance from Janet Jackson to honor the career of her late brother Michael.

In the announcement, the network noted Michael Jackson was an influential figure in the history of the VMAs.

Tonight’s BET Awards featured last-minute changes to the show to honor late entertainer Michael Jackson. The show opened with a medley of Jackson’s songs by New Edition. Host Jamie Foxx then came out dressed like Jackson and performed “Beat It.”

“That man was ours…It was all about what he sound like,” Foxx said. He went on to ask, “Who was the best?”  to which the audience cheered “Michael Jackson.”  Foxx then moon-walked to even more cheers.

When the chairman CEO of BET Networks, Debra Lee, took the stage, she recognized the legacy Jackson left behind. “We knew immediately we would have to change the nature of this show. Michael Jackson was so important to our country, to our world and to our network.” She continued, “We wanted to do the perfect tribute to Michael Jackson.”

In a shocking conclusion to the show, Janet Jackson (sister of Michael) came out on stage. Visibly shaken, she said “To you Michael is an icon. To us Michael is family. He will forever live in all of hearts.” As she left the stage in tears, Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo began singing Jackson’s “I’ll Be There” as a montage of Jackson played on a screen behind them.

Per Ars Technica, the U.S. Supreme Court has ordered a federal appeals court to re-examine its ruling against CBS for Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” during the 2004 Superbowl.

The FCC’s original ruling, now commonly referred to as “Nipplegate,” ordered the network to pay a $550,000 fine after Jackson’s breast was briefly bared during a halftime performance. That fine was later thrown out by the lower court on the grounds that the incident was “fleeting,” meaning it lasted less than one second. Now the fine may be reinstated.

The decision comes a week after the top court’s decision to support the an FCC ruling against FOX Television for “fleeting expletives” used on air.

Writing on behalf of the majority vote, Justice Antonin Scalia explained, “because the FCC’s prior safe-harbor-for-single-words approach would likely lead to more widespread use, and in light of technological advances reducing the costs of bleeping offending words, it was rational for the agency to step away from its old regime.”
