“Sherlock Holmes” stole the box office last Christmas, and Christmas 2011 is expected to be no different. EW.com reports that the movie’s sequel will be released on December 16, 2011 and will once again star Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams.

Guy Richie, who directed the first “Holmes,” is also set to direct the sequel. Filming for the second installment is anticipated to start this summer, and fans are already excited:

The theatre world woke up to some serious matters to discuss, as the nominations for the 64th Annual Tony Awards were announced this morning, EW.com reports.

The sweet melodies of the stage dominated the field, with musicals “Fela!” and “La Cage aux Folles” each receiving 11 nominations. “Memphis,” another musical, nipped at their heels with eight nods. “Fences” rolled in at the top of the plays category with ten nominations, including two for its star performers, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.

Other well-known actors and actresses earned nominations, too. Big names including Jude Law, Christopher Walken, Laura Linney, Kelsey Grammer, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Scarlett Johansson appeared on the nominations list alongside other talented performers.

The results will be in when the Tony Awards are presented on June 13.

“Avatar” led the box office for the fourth straight weekend, according to EW.com, earning $48.5 million. The sci-fi flick became the seventh-highest grossing movie of all time in America and will likely jump a few spots on the list next weekend.

But studios and fans alike are still waiting to see if the movie will “knock ‘Titanic’ off its perch as the domestic and worldwide box-office king.” Both films were made by James Cameron. “Titanic” earned $600.8 million in America and $1.8 billion globally while “Avatar” currently has banked $429 million in the states and $1.3 billion overall.

The Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law film “Sherlock Holmes” came in second with $16.6 million in its third weekend for a total of $165.2 million. At third was “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” with $16.3 million and a total gross of $178.2 million.

The new thriller “Daybreakers” came in fourth, making $15 million. The Ethan Hawke vampire movie had a reported budget of only $20 million, which means it will likely break even and then some.

Per PEOPLE.com, British actor Jude Law will be crossing the pond to star in the Broadway production of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”  Previews will begin in the fall.

Law, who is already starring in a small-stage version of the show, last appeared on Broadway in 1995.

The Cannes Film Festival officially wrapped up with Austria’s The White Ribbon receiving the Palme d’Or award but everyone’s talking about something else: “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”–the film Heath Ledger was making before his tragic death.

The film, directed by Terry Gilliam, was screened for the first time as part of the festival. According to E! Online, Ledger “plays a snake-oil salesman type who is found hanging from a London bridge by two members of a traveling theater troupe. The group introduces Ledger to a magic portal that allows him to travel to different fantastical worlds that exist within people’s imaginations.”

Because Ledger died before the film’s completion, the director asked Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell to fulfill Ledger’s rolle, as he makes his way through the portal worlds.
