Obama Speech Could Conflict with “Lost” Premiere–Or “Idol”

“Lost” fans might have to wait an additional week to catch the show’s February 2 season premiere if President Obama decides to schedule his State of the Union address the same evening, TVGuide.com reports.

In the event of a televised speech by the President, networks usually preempt their normal programming. While the date of the address has not been officially booked, Obama is looking into either January 26, the “American Idol” premiere, or February 2.

Tweeps are expressing their distaste over the possible conflict by tweeting under the hash tag #NoStateofUnionFeb2:

“Heroes” Most Pirated Show of 2009

NBC’s “Heroes” sits atop the list of the most pirated TV shows of 2009, totaling more than 6 million illegal downloads per episode, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The news marks a new trend in TV viewership as this is the first year the total amount of downloads for some shows has exceeded the viewership total from when the program was broadcast on network television. TorrentFreak, a site that tracks downloads, suggests the increased piracy might be the result of viewers in other countries having to days, weeks or sometimes months before the episode is broadcast on their local television stations.

Rounding out the top 5 of the most pirated shows in 2009 are: “Lost,” “Prison Break,” “Dexter” and “House.”

A look at “Heroes”-related tweets shows several in the Twitterverse are among those downloading the show or spreading the news:

J.J. Abrams Tackling Comedy Genre at FOX

According to The Hollywood Reporter, J.J. Abrams signed on to create (and most likely produce) a half-hour medical-based sitcom for FOX. Abrams is teaming up with “Becker” writer Mike Markowitz for the project.

Abrams’ television resume includes fan favorites such as “Alias,” “Lost” and most recently “Fringe,” and his film career has included the blockbusters “Star Trek” and “Cloverfield.”

This past weekend, hundreds of fans gathered in San Diego for the annual Comic Con. It was the convention’s 40th anniversary, and featured sneak peeks at anticipated films such as “New Moon” and “Iron Man 2,” as well as panels with the casts of “Lost” and “Chuck.”

Primetime Emmy Nominees Announced

The nominees for the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today, with “Mad Men” and “30 Rock” leading the nominations with 16 and 22 nods respectively, according to CNN.com. The two shows came out on top last year, with “Mad Men” taking best drama and “30 Rock,” which just announced a syndication deal, won best comedy series.

A surprising nominee this year for best comedy series is FOX’s “Family Guy,” which was taken off the air for a while then returned in 2005. It is only the second animated TV series in history to be nominated for the best comedy series category. The other was “The Flintstones” in 1961.

The nominees for Best Drama Series include: “Big Love,” “Breaking Bad,” “Damages,” “Dexter,” “House,” “Lost,” and “Mad Men.”

The nominees for Best Comedy Series are: “Entourage,” “Family Guy,” “Flight of the Concords,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Office,” “30 Rock,” and “Weeds.”

Though some categories were expanded to seven nominees this year, there were quite a few snubs. “Grey’s Anatomy” received no nominations in the major categories, and neither did “Desperate Housewives”, which only received nominations for best guest actor and best hairstyling.

Other shows that came up empty in major categories were “ER,” “Boston Legal,” “Battlestar Galactica,” and HBO’s “True Blood.” The popular FX drama “The Shield” got snubbed completely.

“Grey Gardens,” which aired on HBO earlier this year, was nominated for 17 awards, including best made-for-TV movie.

Part Computer, Part TV: It’s the Hulu Desktop

A downloadable desktop application from Hulu launched on Thursday. Accordng to PC Magazine, Hulu Desktop, compatible for Windows or Mac, provides access to full-length TV shows and movies via the computer. The system can be controlled with a mouse, keyboard, or PC/Apple computer remote.

The company wrote in a blog post, “Hulu Desktop was built by a small group on our engineering team who asked themselves one day: how can we make it easier for users to immerse themselves in the great shows and movies Hulu is fortunate to have access to?”

Since its debut in March 2008, Hulu formed partnerships with networks including NBC and News Corp to provide television content to internet users. In April of this year, ABC also jumped on board, according to a past PC Magazine article, providing shows like “Lost,” “Dancing with the Stars” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Hulu Announces Partnership With Disney

Disney, one of the largest media and entertainment companies in the world, has joined forces with popular video hub Hulu–which may mean trouble for rival YouTube, according to an article on CNET.com.

Per the deal, Disney will be provide Hulu with full episodes from its television network affiliates, including ABC. Hulu will host shows such as “LOST,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Private Practice,” and “Greek,” among others.

Also according to the article, Hulu has snatched up content from three out of the six big-time film studios. The other three, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. and Paramount, leave YouTube with little to vie for. While Sony has agreed to share a small amount of content with both Hulu and YouTube, Warner Bros. keeps most of its content off the web, and Paramount’s parent company is currently suing YouTube for copyright infringement.

Disney chief executive Robert A. Iger commented on the Disney-Hulu partnership in a NYTimes.com story: “Disney and Hulu share a focus on delivering the highest-quality entertainment experience, and we look forward to working with Hulu to build value for our consumers, our brands and our shareholders.”

The Twitterverse seems pleased with, and even excited about, the partnership.
