After a long and arduous journey, “American Idol” finally picked its finalists for the grand finale that will air next week. The two finalists are Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox, which means that Casey James was sent home from the competition this week, People.com reports.

The episode also showcased the singing talents of Travis Garland, a triple-threat act discovered by Perez Hilton, and teen sensation Justin Bieber as they both performed their own songs to fill in the time before the contestants (and America) got their results.

The hour also showed the contestants’ trips home to their respective families, where they met fans who made their voices known on how proud they were of the finalists.

On last night’s “American Idol,” aspiring singers auditioned to be the next up and coming pop star — and this time, they did it in front of two well-known singers from the Top 40 world. Avril Lavigne joined Randy Jackson, Kara DioGaurdi and Simon Cowell on the judging panel.

Decked out in punk-rock gear and a devil-horned hoodie, Lavigne was not a favorite in the Twitterverse last night. Katy Perry was more popular, but more so for her glowing good looks and putting DioGaurdi in her place than for her judging, which was harsh at times.

Tonight “American Idol” took their auditions to Chicago, where only 13 people received golden tickets to Hollywood. After the show, plenty were tweeting on the slim pickings in the Windy City:

On tonight’s episode of “American Idol,” Hollywood hopefuls from Atlanta performed for judges Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi, Simon Cowell and guest judge Mary J. Blige. Atlanta brought plenty of talent to the table, as well as some memorable comical auditions.

The final performance of the show quickly became the number one trending topic on Twitter, with the Twitterverse singing in unison, “pants on the ground, pants on the ground,” an original tune by 62-year-old General Larry Platt.

Platt was obviously over the age limit for contestants so it wasn’t clear how he was able to audition but he clearly had an impact on both the judges and viewers.

And yet “Pants on the Ground” wasn’t the only “Idol” topic getting buzz on Twitter after the show. Plenty of tweeps had comments about guest host Mary J. Blige, who couldn’t control her laughter during many awkward auditions.

Abdul’s absence means the show will go back to a 3-judge panel, now consisting of Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi.  In a statement, Fox said:

“Paula Abdul has been an important part of the AMERICAN IDOL family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.”

Per PEOPLE.com, Kara DioGuardi will return to the judges’ panel for the upcoming season of “American Idol.” The songwriter first joined series-long judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul,and Simon Cowell last year for the show’s eighth season.

Abdul, on the other hand, is still unsure if she’ll be back on the show.  Abdul’s doubt goes back to June, and a campaign for her return is ongoing via Twitter. Abdul herself recently tweeted about the subject:

After the Los Angeles Times reported Friday that “American Idol” judge Paula Abdul may not be returning for the show’s eighth season, the paper now reports that fans are fighting back with a Twitter campaign.  Using the hashtag #keeppaula, tweeters are lobbying for Abdul to remain an “Idol” judge alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGaurdi.

Time is slowly running out for Abdul and “Idol” to reach an agreement on her contract.  According to EW.com, August 6 is the first audition date for the next season, and the judges are usually filmed giving feedback.  The footage is then used in episodes, which will air on Fox in January.

Supporters are receiving personal tweets from Abdul.  She told @amy2608, “Your support and being there for me means the WORLD to me!! Thank you so much!”

Even “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest tweeted that he wants Abdul to stay, saying he “can’t imagine doing idol without” her. Abdul has been in negotiations since at least June, when the former pop star admitted she was unsure of her “Idol” future.

Just weeks after Michael Jackson’s death, the music legend’s brothers may have their own reality show on A&E.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network had authorized a one-hour special following Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy as a “backdoor pilot” for a potential series. The project began months ago, and producers already have footage from following the Jackson family members around as they prepare for a new album and reunion tour.

A&E wanted to air the program, tentatively titled “The Jackson Family,” next year. But, given Michael’s recent death and the current turmoil within the family, the network now has to decide whether to proceed.  MTV notes that producers have not shot any additional footage since Michael’s death on June 25.

Adam Lambert and Kris Allen competed to be the next “American Idol” on tonight’s last performance show. Both singers sang three songs – one of their own choice, one chosen by the show’s creator Simon Fuller, and a song written by judge Kara DioGuardi.

Rocker Lambert chose to perform “Mad World,” a favorite from earlier in the season. Simon Cowell called it too theatrical, but the other judges loved it as much they did the first time. For his second performance, he put a rock n’ roll spin on the R&B classic Simon Fuller chose for him,”Change Is Gonna Come.” The final song was “No Boundaries” by Kara DioGaurdi, who told the LA Times it was easy to write a song about “dreams and struggles”, as her own future as an “Idol” judge is unclear.

Lambert fans are out in full force on Twitter, tweeting their adoration and encouraging their followers to vote for him:

Subdued crooner Allen’s first song was “Ain’t No Sunshine,” gathering rave reviews from the judges. Simon Fuller chose “What’s Going On” for Allen’s second song, and while Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell thought it was too low-key, Abdul and DioGuardi liked the Jason Mraz-esque performance, with DioGuardi enthusing that he was the kind of artist that can deliver a “socially conscious” song. In the last performance of the night, however, Allen strained his way through the DioGuardi-penned “No Boundaries.” The judges all agreed the song was too high for him, and Kara asked that people “vote on the whole season” rather than his one performance.

Though “Adam” was trending on Twitter above “Kris,” Allen fans were also tweeting their support:

The competition is heating up on “American Idol,” with only three contestants left in the running. On Tuesday night’s show, the top three sang songs selected by the judges as well as ones of their own choosing.

Paula Abdul chose “Dance, Little Sister” for Danny Gokey, but while his singing received good reviews, Kara DioGuardi wasn’t a fan of Gokey’s moves. He chose “You Are So Beautiful” as his second song, which the judges raved about. Kara told him, “Everything you didn’t do [in your first song], you just did!” Twitterers had mixed reviews of his performances:

Kris Allen had a strong night on the show, first singing the Randy and Kara chosen “Apologize” and then putting his own spin on Kanye West’s hit “Heartless”. While Kara said he didn’t “hit it out of the park,” tweets from “Idol” fans were overwhelmingly positive:
