A new “American Idol” was crowned Wednesday night in a finale that was also a tribute to departing judge Simon Cowell, reports People.com. Illinois native Lee DeWyze won over Ohio musician Crystal Bowersox to become the ninth “American Idol.”

Most of the live finale was dedicated to Cowell, perhaps the most notable “Idol” judge known for his harsh criticisms, who first announced that he would be leaving the show back in January. Seven out of the eight previous “American Idols” and many of the show’s other alumni returned and performed to bid farewell to Cowell, as did artists like Christina Aguilera, Alanis Morissette, Janet Jackson and the still-recovering Bret Michaels.

Former judge Paula Abdul, who left the show after its eighth season and was replaced by talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, was also present to give a few words about her former co-judge. There is no word yet as to who will replace Cowell.

While the Twitterverse was split about the winner, most felt that Cowell will be missed and that the show will not be the same without him. It was Jackson, however, who captured tweeps’ attention at the finale.

After a long and arduous journey, “American Idol” finally picked its finalists for the grand finale that will air next week. The two finalists are Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox, which means that Casey James was sent home from the competition this week, People.com reports.

The episode also showcased the singing talents of Travis Garland, a triple-threat act discovered by Perez Hilton, and teen sensation Justin Bieber as they both performed their own songs to fill in the time before the contestants (and America) got their results.

The hour also showed the contestants’ trips home to their respective families, where they met fans who made their voices known on how proud they were of the finalists.

Just a day after the Grammys, music’s biggest stars gathered together to re-record “We Are the World,” EW.com reports.   The song, written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, first debuted in1985 with the voices of more than 30 top performers.

This time around, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Jennifer Hudson, Pink, Nicole Richie, and Snoop Dogg were among the 81 performers went to the original recording studio to record the new version of “We Are the World.”  Proceeds from the single, which will be unveiled during the Olympics later this month, will benefit earthquake victims in Haiti.  The recording session came just a few days after the 25th anniversary of the song’s original release.

“American Idol” judge Simon Cowell also organized a recording session to benefit Haiti, EW.com also reports.  Jon Bon Jovi, Miley Cyrus, Susan Boyle, Rod Stewart, Michael Buble and James Blunt were among the singers who gathered in the studio to re-ecord R.E.M.’s hit single “Everybody Hurts.”

The Twitterverse seems conflicted over the R.E.M. remake, even though it is for charity.  Some applaud the new version while others say some songs are better off left alone:

On Wednesday, “American Idol” went to Dallas and met up with guest judges Neil Patrick Harris and Joe Jonas. The “How I Met Your Mother” star wasn’t afraid to speak his mind and even disagree with Simon Cowell, winning over many in the Twitterverse.

On last night’s “American Idol,” aspiring singers auditioned to be the next up and coming pop star — and this time, they did it in front of two well-known singers from the Top 40 world. Avril Lavigne joined Randy Jackson, Kara DioGaurdi and Simon Cowell on the judging panel.

Decked out in punk-rock gear and a devil-horned hoodie, Lavigne was not a favorite in the Twitterverse last night. Katy Perry was more popular, but more so for her glowing good looks and putting DioGaurdi in her place than for her judging, which was harsh at times.

Tonight “American Idol” took their auditions to Chicago, where only 13 people received golden tickets to Hollywood. After the show, plenty were tweeting on the slim pickings in the Windy City:

On tonight’s episode of “American Idol,” Hollywood hopefuls from Atlanta performed for judges Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi, Simon Cowell and guest judge Mary J. Blige. Atlanta brought plenty of talent to the table, as well as some memorable comical auditions.

The final performance of the show quickly became the number one trending topic on Twitter, with the Twitterverse singing in unison, “pants on the ground, pants on the ground,” an original tune by 62-year-old General Larry Platt.

Platt was obviously over the age limit for contestants so it wasn’t clear how he was able to audition but he clearly had an impact on both the judges and viewers.

And yet “Pants on the Ground” wasn’t the only “Idol” topic getting buzz on Twitter after the show. Plenty of tweeps had comments about guest host Mary J. Blige, who couldn’t control her laughter during many awkward auditions.

Last night’s season premiere of “American Idol,” the kick-off of the show’s ninth season, stayed true to classic “Idol” form. The Boston auditions featured plenty of cringe-worthy singers as well as some promising new faces with powerful voices.

Although the formula remained the same, there were some noticeable changes on the judges panel. Victoria Beckham, or “Posh Spice” of The Spice Girls, took Paula Abdul’s now vacant seat next to Simon Cowell, who announced Monday that this season will be his last. Beckham is one of several guest judges who will appear in the early rounds. Ellen DeGeneres, who will be a permanent judge, will begin appearing later in the season.

Many in the Twitterverse were critical of Beckham, who wore a lace headband and didn’t have much to say during the auditions, although others appreciated her Paula-esque niceness.

Simon Cowell, the insulting-yet-lovable Brit who became a household name in America nearly eight years ago, has announced he will step down from “American Idol” after the new season–which officially debuts tomorrow night, January 12–ends.

Cowell was brought on stage by FOX executives during a panel at TCA, a yearly multi-day event where television critics hear directly from network execs as well as casts and crews of hit TV shows.

Cowell won’t be leaving American TV, however, as he will bring his hit British show “The X-Factor” to Fox in fall of 2011. Like “Idol,” “X-Factor” is a reality competition with a panel of judges, but contestants can be groups and aren’t limited by age.

As the end of 2009 draws near, Entertainment Weekly has revealed its “Best of the Decade” selections. Categories include “15 Entertainers of the 2000s” and 10 “Best of the Decade” picks for movies, TV shows, albums and books, among others.

Among the 15 entertainers named were actors, singers, authors, TV personalities, directors, and businessmen, including Johnny Depp, Beyonce, J.K. Rowling, Simon Cowell, Peter Jackson, and Steve Jobs.

“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy topped the Best Movies list, while “The Sopranos” was named the Best TV show. Kanye West’s “The College Dropout” earned Best Album. Best Book was Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road,” which has been adapted into a movie of the same name that is currently in theaters.
