Sandra Bullock to Receive MTV Generation Award

After a rollercoaster of a year professionally, privately, and emotionally, actress Sandra Bullock is about to be honored again. MTV.com and CNN.com report that Bullock will be receiving the MTV Generation Award during the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, which will be hosted by comedian Aziz Ansari and airs June 6th on the iconic network.

Bullock, 45, who has starred in hits like “The Blind Side” and “The Proposal,” will be the first female honoree of the lifetime achievement award, with past recipients including Jim Carrey, Spike Lee, Ben Stiller, and Adam Sandler.

This event will also mark Bullock’s reappearance in the public eye after martial issues with her husband Jesse James.

Sandra Bullock Earns Best and Worst Actress Nominations in Same Week

After more than a decade as one of Hollywood’s A-list actresses, Sandra Bullock has begun a new chapter in her career with an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role as Leigh Anne Tuohy in the football drama “The Blind Side.” But MTV.com reports that the Oscar isn’t the only nomination Bullock received this week. She is also up for a Razzie award in the Worst Actress category for her ditzy role in “All About Steve.”

Pulling off both nominations is a rare and perhaps bittersweet feat but, as Entertainment Weekly declared in December, Bullock is having “the best year of her career.” Both “The Blind Side” and “The Proposal” were box office hits, offsetting the “All About Steve” dud.

Oscar Nominees Announced, “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker” Lead

Nominees for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning.

“Avatar” and ”The Hurt Locker” led the nominations with nine each. Interestingly enough, the two contenders were directed by ex-spouses James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow. Both films received Best Picture and Best Director nominations.

The biggest change in the nominations was the expansion of the Best Picture category, which now has 10 nominees instead of five. The directors of three other Best Picture nominees, “Up in the Air,” ”Inglourious Basterds,” and “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” are also up for Best Director. The other nominees for Best Picture are “District 9,” “The Blind Side,” “An Education,” and “A Serious Man.” Pixar’s “Up” also received a nod and is the category’s only animated nominee.

For Best Actor, the five nominees were Jeff Bridges (”Crazy Heart”), George Clooney (”Up in the Air”), Colin Firth (”A Single Man”), Morgan Freeman (”Invictus”), and Jeremy Renner (”The Hurt Locker”).

Sandra Bullock (”The Blind Side”), Helen Mirren (”The Last Station”), Carey Mulligan (”An Education”), Gabourey Sidibe (”Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire”) and Meryl Streep (”Julie & Julia”) all received nominations for Best Actress.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made headlines in the months leading up to the voting and nomination announcement, when they added new members (among them Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway) and eliminated past winner Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story” from their so-called pre-nominations for the documentary category. The Michael Jackson “This Is It” documentary wasn’t submitted for the category and had a chance at a Best Picture nomination but didn’t garner one–or any, for that matter.

SAG Award Winners Announced, Betty White Honored

While “Avatar” was a Golden Globe winner and remains an Oscar front-runner, its success was absent at the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards with “Inglourious Basterds” winning big, according to EW.com. “Basterds” won Best Ensemble Cast, the top prize of the night, and Best Supporting Actor went to star Christoph Waltz.

But just like at the Globes, “The Blind Side” star Sandra Bullock ousted Meryl Streep for Best Actress and Jeff Bridges won Best Actor again for his leading role in “Crazy Heart.”

Similarly, in the television realm, several of the Golden Globe winners were repeated, including “Glee,” “Mad Men” and “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin.

Director James Cameron’s blockbuster film “Avatar” is nominated for a total of four Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Original Score and Best Original Song. Competing against “Avatar” for the coveted Best Picture award are “The Hurt Locker,” “Precious,” “Inglourious Basterds,” and “Up in the Air.”

“Up in the Air” is also a strong contender, with nominations in a total of five categories. “Gleeks” around the world been rejoicing that the FOX hit has scooped up three Golden Globe nominations. Lea Michele is nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical, and Jane Lynch is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Comedy or Musical. The show itself is also up for Best Television Show – Comedy or Musical.

“Avatar” Tops the Box Office

The highly-anticipated 3-D sci-fi action film, “Avatar,” opened in first place this week with roughly $73 million in box office receipts, reports EW.com. Despite a blizzard on the East Coast, the film had a “solid opening,” albeit below initial expectations.

Last week’s number one film, “The Princess and the Frog,” dropped 50 percent to second place with $12.2 million while Sandra Bullock’s “The Blind Side” came in third place with $10 million.

Tweeps have been overwhelmingly positive towards the box office films, especially “Avatar”:

“The Princess and the Frog” Earns Box Office Crown

Disney’s 2-D animated film, “The Princess and the Frog,” opened at number one with $25 million, reports EW.com. The movie features Disney’s first African-American princess and has received positive reviews from both audiences and critics alike.

“The Blind Side” fell to the number two spot, adding $15.4 million to its $150 million total.

Overall, the top 12 films together made the box office increase 8 percent over last year.

Tweeps are having an overwhelmingly positive response to “The Princess and the Frog.”

“The Blind Side” Beats “New Moon” at Box Office

Sandra Bullock’s football drama “The Blind Side” out-hustled the competition this weekend at the box office by earning $20.4 million, according to EW.com.

“The Blind Side” managed to overtake “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” after trailing the vampire hit for two weeks. The film has now grossed $129.3 million, making it likely to surpass “The Proposal” as the biggest hit of Bullock’s career.
