The adventures of a ‘Wimpy Kid’ are about to continue on the big screen.

Variety reports that David Bowers is close to signing on the dotted line to direct the further exploits of Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) on the big screen. The sequel will be based on the second book of the popular children’s series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, and is set for release on March 25, 2011, a little over a year from the release of the first film, which grossed $63 million domestically for FOX. Gordon is confirmed to reprise his role as Greg in the film.

The adventures of Manny, Diego, Sid, and Scrat will continue in “Ice Age: Continental Drift” starting on July 13, 2012, Variety reports. The film will also be presented in 3D.

The “Ice Age” films have grossed more than $1 billion dollars worldwide. The last film, “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” grossed close to $900 million dollars alone worldwide last year, making another sequel inevitable. No story line or returning cast members have been announced yet, but it’s a safe bet that everyone involved in the last movie might return.

The Earth Day release of James Cameron’s astronomical blockbuster film “Avatar” has thus far yielded $6.7 billion in worldwide DVD sales, Variety.com reports.

“Avatar” lovers worldwide expressed their desire to return to Pandora by helping the movie to shatter both DVD and Blu-ray sales records, previously held by “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and “The Dark Knight,” respectively. First-day sales saw “Avatar” rocket to the top of the record books with customers snatching up 1.7 million DVD copies and 1.5 million Blu-ray discs.

The version of “Avatar” available now is 2-D with a few extra features. Twentieth Century Fox is planning on a November re-release of the 2-D disc including a great deal more “Avatar” goodness in the form of extra footage and special features, and a 3-D version is set to hit shelves in 2011.

If you enjoy Disney-Pixar films, prepare to be celebrate – the company has announced its plans for a sequel to the 2001 hit film “Monsters Inc.,” reports Variety.

In addition to the sequel, which is set to debut on November 16, 2012, the next two years will be important ones in the world of animation. Disney-Pixar’s “Toy Story 3″ will be released this summer, and “Cars 2,” will follow shortly in 2011. In addition, an entirely female-fueled Pixar film called “Brave” will release on June 15, 2012. Reese Witherspoon will star in the film about a princess who desires to become the first great female archer.

The announcement of the new movie release dates comes just as Disney announced plans to produce 14-16 movies (live action and animated as well) a year through the combined efforts  of its partners Marvel and Dreamworks.

The model and dancing star has hosted numerous shows including “E! Wild On” and the music competition “Rock Star.” There had been reports that Burke was competing for the job alongside other DWTS alumni including Melissa Rycroft, Vanessa Minnillo and Spice Girls Mel B. Rycroft and Mel B.

The new season of “Dancing With the Stars” premieres on ABC on Monday, March 22 with a two-hour special at 8 p.m. EST. It seems that the Twitter-nation is divided on whether or not Burke is the better choice compared to Melissa Rycroft.

“Hairspray” director Adam Shankman has signed on to direct the movie adaptation of Chris D’Arienzo’s muscial “Rock of Ages,” reports Variety.

The musical follows the struggles of a couple who meet at a club called “Rock of Ages” and fall in love. It features many ’80s rock anthems by artists such as Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister and Journey.

Shankman described the upcoming New Line Cinema production as “‘Mamma Mia!’ for dudes.”

According to Variety, reality star turned designer and author Lauren Conrad’s debut novel “L.A. Candy” will be made into a movie by Temple Hill Entertainment, the producers of the “New Moon” and “Eclipse” movies of the “Twilight Saga” series.

The book, which has been on The New York Times’ Best Seller list for 14 weeks since its publication in June, follows the life of 19-year-old reality star Jane Roberts. Two sequels are currently being planned.

The Facebook phenomenon is continuing to move into the cinematic realm, with singer Justin Timberlake starring Sean Parker, the social networking Web site’s founding president, reports Variety.

The movie, tentatively named “The Social Network,” will also star Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin, the co-founder who had a falling out with Zuckerberg.

The Columbia Pictures production will be directed by David Fincher and will highlight the formation of Facebook, the phenomenon behind it, and how success and wealth changed the lives of the friends who founded it.

Another “Fantastic Four” movie is being scripted, according to Variety. 20th Century Fox is working on renovating the franchise, which includes the 2005 and 2007 releases “Fantastic Four” and “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” respectively.

Akiva Goldsman, who has produced films such as “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “I Am Legend,” has been tapped as the producer. The script will be written by “Heroes” co-executive producer Michael Green. There is no word yet on whether Chris Evans, Jessica Alba or any of the other stars of the previous films will reprise their roles.

Per Variety.com, producers will relaunch the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles–Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael–and their master Splinter, in a new film set to open in 2011.

Writer John Fusco recently signed on to the project.  He has practiced martial arts since age 12, and continues to study Shaolin kung fu, qualities he said will help him handle the live-action elements of the movie.

Fusco told Variety in an interview, “It is always exciting when you can come aboard a project that bridges the worlds of what you do with what you love.”  The writer also plans to incorporate many elements of the “Turtles” comics, created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman in 1983.

According to the article, the Ninja Turtles starred in four films for New Line in the early 1990s that earned more than $323 million worldwide.  The animated feature, “TMNT,” helped reignite interest in the foursome, but only brought in $95 million for Warner Bros.
