Prince to be Honored at BET Awards

According to Yahoo!, singer Prince will be receiving a lifetime achievement award at the BET Awards later this month.

The successful and influential artist, who has released 10 platinum albums and 30 Top 40 singles, joins James Brown, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Al Green and other important African American artists in receiving the honor. BET said that the tribute will reflect and celebrate Prince’s “unique style.”

The BET Awards, hosted by Queen Latifah, will be held on June 27 in Los Angeles.

BET’s choice of honoree resonated with tweeps.

“So You Think You Can Dance” Returns With New Judges

Summer’s dance show phenomenon “So You Think You Can Dance” returns on May 27 and brings new judges with it, reports Yahoo! News. Mary Murphy, who has been a judge since 2007, will not be a recurring judge this season, allowing her the opportunity to do more choreographing with the show. Instead, Mia Michaels will be joining the judges’ panel. Michaels has choreographed for Celine Dion and Cirque du Soleil. She won an Emmy in 2007 for her choreography routine to “Calling You” on “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Adam Shankman, also a choreographer for SYTYCD, will be returning to the show as a judge this season. Shankman directed the 2007 film re-make of “Hairspray,” and has also choreographed music videos for Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder, among others.

Nigel Lythgoe, co-creator of the dance show, will return as a judge for the show’s seventh season.

The Twitterverse has mixed emotions about the “M&M” switch.

Sunday night the Twitterverse turned its attention to the much-promoted American Music Awards, which honored the best in music and featured performances from more than a dozen hit singers and bands. Award nominations were announced in October.

Hundreds of tweets came in every second, as tweeps reacted to the awards as they were presented by fellow musicians and famous actors. Taylor Swift took home the most awards, winning all 5 categories she was nominated in.

Oprah Announces “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Ending in 2011

Talk show queen Oprah announced today that her signature show “The Oprah Winfrey Show” will be ending on September 9, 2011.

Rumors that the television pioneer would abandon her show after 25 years have circulated for weeks. The timing comes as Winfrey works on launching her own digital cable channel, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network).

Her company HARPO (that’s Oprah spelled backwards, folks) released a statement yesterday first announcing the end date to fellow media companies. Winfrey used today’s broadcast to confirm the report and explain the reasoning behind her decision.

According to her Web site, she said, in part: “Here is the real reason: I love this show. This show has been my life. And I love it enough to know when it’s time to say good-bye. Twenty-five years feels right in my bones and it feels right in my spirit. It’s the perfect number—the exact right time. So I hope that you will take this 18-month ride with me right through to the final show.”

Per a separate release: “After production wraps on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’ Winfrey plans to appear and participate in new programming for OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, a 24-hour cable network that reflects her vision, values and interests. The launch date for OWN, a joint venture with Discovery Communications, is now set for January 2011.”

Just earlier this year, Winfrey held a massive block party in Chicago to kick off her new season and then officially debuted with a two-part interview with Whitney Houston. In May, Winfrey announced a spin-off show featuring Dr. Mehmet Oz (and rumors say she’ll soon do the same with interior designer Nate Berkus) and revealed plans to make a talk show for Jenny McCarthy as well. Also in May, CNBC broadcast “The Oprah Effect,” a look at how “The Oprah Winfrey Show” can lead to a profit increase for companies that are featured on the program.

Winfrey has yet to explicitly say what she will do on OWN.

Oprah’s New Season Debuts With Whitney Houston

Oprah premiered the 24th season of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” with a 2-part interview with singer Whitney Houston. The episodes aired Monday and Tuesday.

Houston, who recently released her album “I Look to You,” revealed to the talk show host her struggles with drug abuse and the pain of her tumultuous 14-year marriage to Bobby Brown.

Oprah called her interview with Houston “the best interview I’ve ever done.” Twitterers’ sentiments, however, were mixed. While some agreed with Oprah, others felt Houston blamed Brown too much for her own problems:

Susan Boyle, the “Britain’s Got Talent” runner-up just announced the November 24 release of her album, “I Dreamed a Dream,” and it’s already Number 1 on Amazon.com’s best-sellers list, according to a report from EW.com.

Fans identified with Boyle as a single, middle-aged underdog and made her a worldwide phenomenon when video of her singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables” hit the internet. The YouTube star is currently ahead of the Beatles’ remastered “Abbey Road” (No. 2) and Whitney Houston’s “I Look to You” (No. 3).

Whitney Houston Blames Oprah For Bad Performance

Whitney Houston’s comeback performance was less than perfect on Wednesday’s “Good Morning America,” and the singer is pointing fingers at Oprah, reports TVGuide.com.

After Houston’s voice cracked during “I Look To You,” she apologized to fans. “I’m so sorry. I did “Oprah.” I’ve been talking for so long…I talked so much, my voice,” she told the crowd in New York City’s Central Park. “I shouldn’t be talking. I should be singing.”

According to the report, she was only going to perform two songs during the show but went ahead with four.

Whitney Houston Comeback Official As Album Streams Online

Whitney Houston, the latest one-time superstar to make a comeback, has made her new album available for purchase via shopping channel QVC’s Web site, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Set to hit stores officially Aug. 31, “I Look to You” is Houston’s first album in seven years, and is also streaming on her Web site. USA Today predicts Houston’s return is “sure to be one of the most closely watched comeback campaigns in decades.”

The album has already received many positive reviews from industry insiders, and producers are hoping the album will be well-received by the public as well. Two singles from the disc, “I Look to You” and “Million Dollar Bill,” were released to radio stations earlier this summer and have done relatively well, with the latter landing in the top 40.

TIME Magazine Commemorates Michael Jackson

TIME Magazine has published a special commemorative edition in honor of the recently deceased “king of pop” Michael Jackson.

According to ETOnline, celebrities like Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Clive Davis and Kobe Bryant have penned tributes to the pop star and “the mark he has made on the world of music and pop culture.”

The issue, which came out on newsstands today, also features “a 10-album catalog of chart-topping hits” and a chronology of his life.

Jackson fans on Twitter were eager to pick up their copy of the special edition:

Whitney Houston announced today she will release a new album this September, reports People.com. The CD, possibly titled “Undefeated,” will be Houston’s first in nearly 7 years.
