Florida State baseball pounds Ohio State for NCAA postseason record 37 runs

A day after Texas and Boston College showed what good pitching looks like, the Ohio State Buckeyes’ baseball team demonstrated what not to do on the mound.

The No. 3 seed Buckeyes, which defeated Georgia earlier Sunday, gave up 37 runs to the No. 1 seed Seminoles, an NCAA postseason record, losing 37-6 in the Tallahassee Regional, per the Tallahassee Democrat.

Florida State advances and will likely host Arkansas in an NCAA Super Regional starting May 5.

FSU scored eight runs in the first, three in the second, nine in the third, just one in the fourth, and 11 in the fifth to take a commanding 31-0 lead.

After two scoreless innings, the ‘Noles added three more in the eighth and two in the ninth.

What were some of the tweets from the Sunshine state saying?

Third baseman Stephen Cardullo went 7-for-9 for the ‘Noles with five RBI– the hits tying a Florida State team record for a game.

Ohmed Danesh went 4-for-7 with 5 RBI, Jason Stidham was 4-for-5 with 4 RBI, Mike Meschke was 5-for-6 with 4 RBI, and six other Seminoles recorded multiple hits and RBI.

Florida State only hit three homeruns (Meschke, Danesh, Tommy Oravetz), but recorded an NCAA all-time record 15 doubles and 66 total bases.

FSU (@FSU_Baseball) also set an NCAA single-game record for hits with 38.

One FSU Twitterer captured the score in this twitpic:

What do you think about all the offense in the game? Did FSU run up the score or were they just hitting what Ohio State threw over the plate? Post your comments below or tweet @BTsports.

I might have thought the score was run up, but I saw this post in another forum that clarified:

"The sad thing is, 37 runs could have been 50+. By the 6th inning, FSU had it's #1 starting pitcher playing 1st base, it's #4 starter DHing, it's 6'7 #5 starter pinch hitting for the first time in his career, and every other backup they could find in the game. And they still kept scoring.

Some people might think that 37 runs was running up the score, but there was nothing to be done short of intentionally striking out. FSU's coach even tried to appeal to the NCAA to allow the umpires to call the game after 7 innings (when it was 32-4), but the NCAA wouldn't do it."
