United States loses to Costa Rica in Men’s World Cup Qualifier

I’ve been to Costa Rica, and my memories are pleasant ones. Can’t say the same for the US Men’s National Soccer Team.

The US got spanked by host Costa Rica 3-1 in a World Cup Qualifying match. Landon Donovan scored the United States’ only goal on a penalty kick in the final minute.

Up next is Honduras, which the US team will face Saturday at Soldier Field in Chicago.

BT Sports followed storylines in our in-game tweet log:

2nd Half:

US now down 3-0…game all but decided. Focus shifts to the in flight meal and what DVD to watch on plane ride home. The shift for tweeting soccer fans is US coach Bob Bradley. Tar and feather the coach! That’s the answer!

  1. WVHooligan
wvhooligan Wouldn’t doubt if lots of people call for Bradley’s head tomorrow if this result stands #usmnt
  2. PZ
    ericpz New #USMNT hashtag: #BradleyFail
  3. Jay Smith
bcoutlander Hopefully we have a new coach before we don’t qualify for 2010 #usmnt

US still down 2-0…developing story in Costa Rica. Tough yellow card on Michael Bradley, he’s out for Saturday’s match with Honduras.

Tweet react to the news:

  1. PZ
ericpz soft yellow on Bradley Jr. #USMNT Can we get his dad suspended for Saturdays match too?
  2. jmarthaler
jmarthaler @bigpieps If we can’t beat them at home, even without Bradley, then we have much much bigger problems. #usmnt
  3. Louie Yan
manila58 #USMNT v Costa Rica: Bradley gets a yellow card. We’re not surprised…or amused. Does he play so much because daddy’s the coach?

1st Half:

Rough start tonight for the US National Team in an important World Cup qualifying match.

At halftime, the United States is down 2-0 to host Costa Rica, who scored two goals in the first 13 minutes. You can follow the action play-by-play on @ussoccer.

Plenty of time for the United States to turn it around, after all, they came from two goals behind to tie El Salvador in a qualifier earlier this year.

Early Tweets are a bit unpatriotic about our national team’s performace. God bless America’s soccer team? I think not.

  1. Ryan Tamblin
RyanT77 Watching the US soccer team get spanked. Costa Rica is a tough place to play, but this is ridiculous!
  2. Tyler Frazier
tylerjfrazier This US team looks awful! Costa Rica is dominating right now.
  3. Katie Naumec
Kter13 Costa Rica is running circles around the US. Shame Shame.
  4. Rowland Atiase
rowlandinho @nsinclair2 they are playing terrible, costa rica isnt even that good of a team

My mother used to always say if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything. I say if venting, be constructive. Solid x’s and o’s analysis from the twitter-pitch:

  1. clintgraham
clintgraham The US need to control the mid field a bit better! Costa Rica is coming through like water!
  2. PZ
ericpz Bradley needs to drop donovan back into more a mid role. Costa Rica has had too much of the midfield. #USMNT
  3. Brad Ryan
whoisbradryan Costa Rica has some of the hyphiest fans in soccer.. The turf they are playing on us embarrassing
  4. Scott Schmitt
Scott_Schmitt US getting completely punked by Costa Rica

Just heard Alexi Lalas on ESPN call the US’s first half performace “garbage”. Says the turf is “no excuse”. Make enough tactical changes, team can make a 2nd half run.

The U.S. wishes this was a friendly home game:

Will the U.S. crowd be ready for Honduras this coming Saturday?

  • The turf is obviously a factor. It reminds me of the Chicago highways-- nothing smooth

Yeah, but you can't use that as an excuse. It's going to be rainy Saturday in Chicago and they're going to have to deal with it. US hasn't been playing great defense.
