College World Series: Arizona State, Texas stay in winner’s bracket on Day 2
The fans were out in droves for Day 2 of the College World Series from Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska, and they did not leave disappointed.
The Arizona State Sun Devils advanced with an extra inning win over the North Carolina Tar Heels, while No. 1 Texas had to rally in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings to overtake surprise CWS team Southern Miss, per NCAA.com.
Arizona State 5, North Carolina 2 (10 innings)
If you like pitcher’s duels with a little extra, this was the game for you.
Tar Heel pitcher Alex White and Sun Devil starter Josh Spence dueled for seven innings, while the game went to extra innings in a 1-1 tie.
Arizona State (50-12) scored four in the top of the 10th on Carlos Ramirez RBI single and Kole Calhoun’s opposite field three-run homerun. North Carolina (47-17) scored a run in the bottom half, but could not dig out of the large deficit.
jstone336 hopes the Tar Heels can regroup from the 5-2 loss to Arizona State on Tuesday. GO TAR HEELS!!! keithcavey What a great game! Texas 7, Southern Miss 6
The Longhorns have not had an easy run to the CWS (@CWS2009), but have managed with timely plays and gutty performances.
Sunday night they just got lucky.
After taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning then leading 4-2 going to the top of the eighth, Texas (47-14-1) had to find a way to beat a team designed to make comebacks.
The Golden Eagles (40-25) scored three times in the top of the eighth to take a lead– the go-ahead run on a bases loaded walk– but gave up a bases loaded runs on back-to-back in the bottom of the eighth to hand the lead right back.
What did Southern Miss do? Claw right back and tie the game up leading to… a Texas walk-off bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth. Ahh, Omaha.
Here’s some of the Twitter reaction after an amazing, saddening game:
CWS2009 Texas & Southern Miss have already combined for three blown saves in this game #CWS CWS2009 Texas’s last 3 runs score on bases loaded walk. Longhorns advance to winners’ bracket with 7-6 win.
