Games 7 and 8 in Day 4 of the College World Series

North Carolina 11, Southern Miss 4

The Cinderelllas of the College World Series, Southern Mississippi, saw their season come to an end tonight after being defeated by North Carolina 11-4 in an elimination game on Tuesday, per the Omaha World-Herald.

The Golden Eagles couldn’t hold back the Tarheels’ offense. UNC’s first baseman first-team All-American Dustin Ackley’s five hits allowed him to become the CWS career leader in hits with a total of 27.  Ackley singled a run in the first and third, doubled in a run in the second, and hit two more singles in the fifth and seventh. He nearly beat Tennessee’s Kris Bennett’s record of six hits in a single CWS game in 2001.

UNC had 23 hits in the game, which tied the Series single-game record reached by Arizona State in 1984 and 1988 and Southern California in 1998.

The Tarheels jumped to a 8-0 lead in 3.5 innings and never looked back, holding the Golden Eagles to just five hits. A three-run home run from USM shortstop B.A. Vollmuth in the fourth was the only offense in six innings for USM against UNC starter Adam Warren.

Texas 10, Arizona State 6

Texas became the lone undefeated team in Bracket 2 with a win over Arizona State 10-6 Tuesday night.
The Sun Devils dominated the first three innings offensively via homers from Kole Calhoun and Carlos Ramirez, a single and a sacrifice fly from Jared McDonald that drove in a run a piece along with two additional runs.

After digging themselves in a 6-0 hole, the Longhorns’ offense woke up in the fourth and were able to tie up the game. Cameron Rupp ripped a three-run homer, and Travis Tucker’s infield single allowed Preston Clark to score, followed by Brandon Belt’s single to right to bring in Michael Torres and Tucker.

The score remained tied 6-6 until the eighth when Texas’ Kevin Keyes got an RBI double and Brandon Loy’s center field single scored in the final run.

Impressed with Texas’ come-from-behind win, or disappointed ASU gave up a 6-0 lead in Omaha?

The Tarheels advanced to an elimination game on Thursday to play the Sun Devils, and the Longhorns will play the winner of that game.
