College World Series: Arkansas eliminates Virginia

It’s a pretty simple way to win a ballgame: pitch well, play solid defense (no errors) and get a timely hit or two.

Unfortunately for the Virginia Cavaliers’ baseball team, they stranded runners at all the opportune moments, falling 4-3 to Arkanas in 12 innings, per NCAA.com.

The Cavs, first timers to Omaha, left runners on third base with less than two outs over the final four innings of the game, while the Razorbacks came from down 3-1 to win on outfielder Andrew Darr’s RBI-double in the top of the 12th.

In the top of the ninth, Arkansas center fielder Brett Eibner hit a two-out, two-run homerun to tie the game, but the College World Series (@CWS2009) drama was far from over.

In the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and a 3-0 count on a Virginia batter, Arkansas pitcher Dallas Keutchel threw what appeared to be a pitch outside and high for a ball, but the umpire gave him a fortuitous strike call.

One pitch later, Keutchel was out of the jam on a hard-hit 6-4-3 double play.

Virginia (49-15-1) ends their surprising season ranked as high fifth in the country.

The Razorbacks (40-23) will square off again with undefeated LSU (53-16) on Friday afternoon, having lost 9-1 to the Tigers in Monday’s contest.

    he might have been calling it like that for you guys, admittedly the umpiring was horrible, but that doesnt change the fact that the game should have been over after 9 innings. i wish the had that strike zone tracker ESPN does on MLB telecasts. it was blatantly a ball. Yes, UVA should have scored runs over those 4 innings, but that situation doesnt even arise if they walk-off.

    You're right, in fact, we'd have been winning by 3 or more runs if the umpire was calling balls and strikes like you're asking for. Trust me, I feel for you guys cause losing sucks, but you're saying that one call cost you the game. 1 pitch out of 395 total pitches. 195 total pitches by arkansas. Think about it. Anyway...I promise I'm only razzing you guys because i'm a dork and we won and i feel like beating my chest a little. Hopefully we won't get smoked by LSU again. They're an awesome team who's 1-9 batters are on fire. Good luck next year.

    Oh I'm not a UVA guy by any means (Florida State alum) though I was rooting for the ACC and to see you guys lose. I do expect more from the umpiring though. Even in the Ark-FSU series, the 'Noles didnt score runs but watching the Texas-So Miss game the other day where 3 bases loaded walks were called including a walk-off against a Cinderella, you have to wonder why the hesitation to call it there.
