Liverpool marred by injuries before crucial match

On Tuesday, BBC Sport reported that Liverpool will play without defenders Glen Johnson and Fabio Aurelio for Wednesday’s pivotal Champions League match at Olympique Lyon.

Johnson and Aurelio are not the only Red’s hurt, however. Other players previously confirmed as out for Wednesday’s match due to injury are captain Steven Gerrard, midfielder Albert Riera, and defenders Martin Kelly and Martin Srktel.

Even though he is expected to play, another  injury concern for Liverpool is striker Fernando Torres, who was pulled by manager Rafael Benitez during Sunday’s Premier League match at Fulham with the score tied, 1-1.  After losing 3-1, Benetiz received criticism for subbing the Premier League’s top scorer, but insisted that there was no other choice.

Wednesday’s match is crucial for Liverpool, as they currently sit in third place in Group E of the Champions League. A win would be necessary in order for them to keep their chances of making the knockout stages alive.

Some Twitterers were upset with the news of Liverpool’s injuries:

  1. guntherfurlong
guntherfurlong (Malaysia) Keep reading about all the injuries with the Liverpool squad. Damn it!! We’re cursed! :( #LFC #YNWA
  2. Jake Conley
    jconley1 (Undisclosed) I can’t beleive the luck #Liverpool are having…injuries galore…ugghhh.

One Twitter even expressed their pessimism:

  1. Alan Clarke
kitnubbles (Northamptonshire, England) @RebeccaNavarro Sorry I can’t see Liverpool winning anything again this season, too many injuries and too much tinkering for my liking.

Nevertheless, Twitterers think these injuries are no excuse for not performing well:

  1. Ashley Barker
Barkzter (Undisclosed) is annoyed about Liverpool we should be putting teams like this away, injuries or not
  2. simon keenan
simonkeenan007 (Jarrow, Tyne and Wear, England) @empireofthekop injuries or not, this is Liverpool the players picked should be good enough to perform score and win.
