Chelsea wins, extends lead atop Premier League

In a rough clash between two of England’s top squads, Chelsea defeated Manchester United 1-0 Sunday to extend their lead atop the Premier League.

United had their chances with Wayne Rooney coming close on shots in the 67th and 68th minute, but Chelsea captain John Terry headed home the game’s only goal off a Frank Lampard free-kick in the 76th minute. Angered, United expressed a grievance with head referee Martin Atkinson, as Chelsea striker Didier Drogba appeared to be offsides on the play. However, the complaining was to no avail, as the goal would stand and Rooney was given one of the games many yellow cards.

Prior to the match, Chelsea held a two point lead over Manchester United and Arsenal, with the Gunners moving into second place after a 4-1 victory over Wolverhampton on Saturday. With the victory, the Blues extended their lead over the Gunners and the Red Devils to five points.

United striker Dimitar Berbatov even stated after Sunday’s match that he thought the Red Devils and the Blues will ultimately be the only two vying for the Premier League title.

After the win, Twitterers expressed their happiness with Mr. Terry:

Others commented on the calls from referee Martin Atkinson:

  1. Gøran
TerraxTSW (Norway) bad #referee decisions cost #MUFC the victory today. Rooney wasn’t offside, Drogba was. Extra time wasn’t extended for substitute of Alex

  2. Prithwish Ganguly
lovesincognito (Undisclosed) manchester united dominates the match but chelsea wins it. only one goal in it some dubious referring bt wat a match

  3. Katie
ManUGirl11 (Washington D.C.) John Terry really capitalizes on dodgy calls. Weak.

  1. Nathan Griffin
Natoni10 (Undisclosed) Chelsea lucked out today. This victory means nothing. Manchester United can still win the league

  2. Ian Amante
ianeeyan (Singapore) Manchester United loss against Chelsea today doesn’t determine who’s gonna win the cup; not, just yet.
