The victory matched an NHL record for the largest comeback in history and was the biggest comeback in the history of the “Original Six” franchise.

The Flames took an early and commanding lead by scoring 5 unanswered goals within the span of 5:29 in the first period. The Hawks stormed back by scoring 5 unanswered goals, with the deciding goal scored by Brent Seabrook in overtime.

Despite a leg injury that kept former No. 1 pick Sidney Crosby off the ice for most of the game, the Pittsburgh Penguins won 2-1 on the road at Joe Louis Arena to defeat the Detroit Red Wings in Game 7 and lay claim to sport’s largest trophy, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (@PittsburghPost).

Evgeni Malkin was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for Most Valuable Player of the Stanley Cup, adding an assist on Talbot’s second goal.

The Detroit Red Wings defeated — routed, rather — the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-0 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, per the Detroit Free Press.  The Red Wings now take a 3-2 lead in the series with one game shy of clinching the Stanley Cup from the Penguins for a second year in a row.

Despite a strong showing from Pittsburgh in the beginning of the game, the Red Wings dominated the Penguins, scoring four goals in the second period alone. Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma even took Marc-Andre Fleury out of the game with 4:20 left in the period following a Henrik Zetterberg goal.

The Red Wings cruised to a shutout victory on the heels of goals scored bed Zetterberg, Valtteri Filppula, Daniel Cleary, Niklas Kronwall and Brian Rafalski.

Obviously, Penguins fans were pretty disappointed with their team’s performance:

Staal’s goal was short-handed at a time where the Pens were down 2-1, but youth prevailed and the goals did not stop coming.

Evgeni Malkin scored and assisted in the game, marking the 12th time in the playoffs he has registered a multi-point game– two games behind Mario Lemieux’s team record.

The series now shifts back to Hockeytown where the Red Wings hope to regain momentum lost in their quest for back-to-back championships.

Detroit fans have a lot less to cheer about and might even need to worry a little bit about their older squad:

It’s now 2-1 in the Stanley Cup Finals thanks to a 3rd period power play blast from Sergei Gonchar, lifting the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Maxime Talbot scored two goals– the first one and the last one for the Pens who will face off with the Wings again in Game 4 on Thursday night.

Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen scored in the first period for Detroit, which briefly took a 2-1 lead before Kris Letang evened the score before intermission.

Pittsburgh, in the comfort of their home arena, is attempting to get on the board in Game 3 of the series, but the Detroit Red Wings aren’t making it easy for them.

Maxime Talbot got the Pens up 1-0 before Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen scored to lift the Wings to a 2-1 advantage.

But a penalty by Detroit allowed the Penguins a man advantage and they did not miss the opportunity, Kris Letang slapping a goal in 5-hole on Detroit goalie Chris Osgood.

But after Sunday’s 3-1 victory over the Pens, the Red Wings now must be defeated four out of five contests in order to lose the Stanley Cup, per the Detroit Free Press.

Again, Detroit showed they can do it without star Pavel Datsyuk, using strong goalwork from Chris Osgood and a go-ahead second period goal from Johan Franzen to take down the Penguins 3-1 in Game 1 of their Stanley Cup Finals meeting, per ESPN.

The Red Wings’ Brad Stuart scored 13:38 into the first period before Pittsburgh’s Ruslan Fedotenko evened the score five minutes later.

The Red Wings, easy winners in Game 4, had a much tougher go-around in Game 5 against Chicago goalie Cristobal Huet– replacing injured Nikolai Khabibulin– to win 2-1 in overtime and advance to face the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second straight year, per the Detroit Free Press.

Detroit overcame the absence of Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom with goals from former Blackhawk Daniel Cleary in the third period and from Darren Helm four minutes into overtime.

Patrick Kane broke a series scoreless streak with a goal with seven minutes left in the third period, but the Blackhawks could not muster any more offense, especially without Marty Havlat.

After Chicago’s Jonathan Toew’s scored his second goal of the game with 7:40 left in the third period, the Blackhawks were suddenly tied at two with the defending champs and looking to steal a victory in overtime.

That’s when an errant turnover allowed Detroit’s Mikael Samuelsson to be on the receiving end of a 3-0n-1 break, taking Osgood off the hook and capping an electric 3-2 victory in Game 2 of the two teams’ Western Conference Final series, per the Detroit Free Press.

Cheers and jeers were shouted throughout the Motor City, where the Red Wings take a commanding, but not insurmountable 2-0 lead:
