United had their chances with Wayne Rooney coming close on shots in the 67th and 68th minute, but Chelsea captain John Terry headed home the game’s only goal off a Frank Lampard free-kick in the 76th minute. Angered, United expressed a grievance with head referee Martin Atkinson, as Chelsea striker Didier Drogba appeared to be offsides on the play. However, the complaining was to no avail, as the goal would stand and Rooney was given one of the games many yellow cards. 

Prior to the match, Chelsea held a two point lead over Manchester United and Arsenal, with the Gunners moving into second place after a 4-1 victory over Wolverhampton on Saturday. With the victory, the Blues extended their lead over the Gunners and the Red Devils to five points.

United striker Dimitar Berbatov even stated after Sunday’s match that he thought the Red Devils and the Blues will ultimately be the only two vying for the Premier League title.

Now, after a tie, paired with Fiorentina’s victory over Debrecen, Liverpool remains in third place in Group E, 6 points behind Lyon and 5 behind Fiorentina.

If a win wasn’t necessary before, it certainly is now, as a loss will immediately eliminate Liverpool from further contention. However, a Liverpool victory over Debrecen on Nov. 24th will not necessarily decide their fate. Their fate also depends on the result of Fiorentina v. Lyon on the same day. With a victory of their own, Liverpool will also need a Lyon win, moving the Reds within 2 points of Fiorentina with their final match of group play coming against the Italian club.

Immediately after Wednesday’s match, Red’s defender Jamie Carragher said the team still believes that they will get through to the knockout stages. Nevertheless, Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez later mentioned that the Red’s would need a miracle. Also speaking on Liverpool’s possible elimation, Liverpool Goalkeeper Pepe Reina said an early exit would not be a disaster, especially in terms of the team’s rich Champion League history.

Liverpool’s injuries aren’t helping the situation either, as captain Steven Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres might need surgery to fix groin problems.

Before their Champion League match against Debrecen, Liverpool is scheduled to play Birmingham and Manchester City in two separate Premier League matches on Monday Nov. 9 and Saturday Nov. 21, respectively.

Even though he is expected to play, another  injury concern for Liverpool is striker Fernando Torres, who was pulled by manager Rafael Benitez during Sunday’s Premier League match at Fulham with the score tied, 1-1.  After losing 3-1, Benetiz received criticism for subbing the Premier League’s top scorer, but insisted that there was no other choice.

Wednesday’s match is crucial for Liverpool, as they currently sit in third place in Group E of the Champions League. A win would be necessary in order for them to keep their chances of making the knockout stages alive.

On Sunday, Manchester United narrowly defeated crosstown rival Manchester City, 4 -3, in an instant classic at the Old Trafford, with the winning goal coming off the foot of Michael Owen and coming in the final minute of stoppage time.

Having matched Manchester United with three goals, scoring their third just a few minutes prior to Owens’ goal, it seemed that Manchester City would walk away with a tie and add at least 1 point to their Premier League point total.

Nevertheless, Michael Owen would enter the game in the 78th minute, scoring the Red Devil’s fourth and final go-ahead goal less than 20 minutes later, taking away Manchester City’s point and giving his team 3.

With the win, Manchester United now holds sole possession of second place in the Barclay’s Premier League standings with 15 points, 3 points behind undefeated Chelsea. On the other hand, Manchester City moves into a tie for third place with 12 points.

Per ESPN, Chelsea defeated Everton 2-1 to win the FA Cup at Wembly on Saturday. The game was the last for manager Guus Hiddink who will return to his full-time post with Russia.

Everton’s Louis Saha put the first score on the board just :30 into the match, the fastest goal in the history of the FA Cup.

But the Merseysiders had trouble holding on to their lead, and scores from Chelsea’s Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard secured Chelsea’s win. The team outshot Everton on goal 12 to 6 and also controlled the ball for a majority of the game at 58 percent.

Barcelona again proved they are the world’s best– without Ronaldino– shutting out Man U’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, and Carlos Tevez in a 2-0 victory in the Champions League finale in Rome, per ESPN.

Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o found net in the 10th minute , but even with Man U’s vaunted offense with the world’s best player could not match.

Lionel Messi put home an emphatic header in the 70th minute, sending Barcelona fans into pandemonium.

Over the weekend, reports circulated that Real was prepared to offer £75 million for the talented Portuguese winger. Rumors of a possible transfer to Real aren’t new for Ronaldo, and he said in October he didn’t regret turning down an offer to join the Spanish club last summer.
