After a slow start for both squads, the first major incident became an injury to RSL midfielder Javier Morales. Unable to continue, an emotional Morales was subbed out in the 22nd minute.

In the 41st minute, the Galaxy struck first, as 2009 MLS MVP Landon Donovan crossed a ball to Galaxy midfielder Mike Magee at the far post, who kicked it in. RSL created a few scoring chances prior to the half, but were unable to capitalize. At half time, the Galaxy led 1-0.

In the 64th mnute, RSL evened the score. Inside the penalty area, Movsisyan shot a ball toward goal that was immediately blocked. Bouncing around, the ball finally found Findley, who put it home with his left foot. On the play, Ricketts seemed to injure his hand that was already in pain after a collision he had earlier in the half with RSL forward Robbie Findley. Galaxy coach Bruce Arena was ultimately forced to pull Ricketts for backup goalkeeper Josh Saunders. It marked the first time a goalkeeper was substituted in MLS Cup history.

With neither team able to score in the rest of the second half and overtime, RSL and the Galaxy had to take play into a penalty shoot out to crown a champion.

In the first three rounds of the penalty shoot out, both teams matched each other with goals in the first two and saves in the third. In round four, Donovan kicked the ball over the crossbar and Ned Grabavoy knocked one in to give RSL their first lead, 3-2. In round five, Magee would tie it 3-3 for the Galaxy and Andy Williams was stopped by Saunders, keeping it tied. Both teams scored again on their respective kicks in round six to make it 4-4. Finally, in round seven, Rimando came up with a save on an Edsun Buddle kick and Robbie Russell stepped up and hit home a ball into the left corner, giving RSL the win.

For his performance in the penalty shootout, Rimando was named the MLS Cup MVP.

Davies was listed in serious but stable condition Tuesday after suffering a broken right leg and left elbow, and other internal injuries in the single-car accident. The accident killed 22-year-old Ashley Roberta and a third passenger was not identified.

His injuries are not life-threatening, but may keep Davies out of the World Cup in June.

The San Diego Padres-Houston Astros baseball game was delayed Thursday after a swarm of bees descended on the field. The game was stopped for 45 minutes as a uniformed bee keeper–they have these guys on retainer?–attended to the unusual act of nature.

Sam Fuld and Cubs hope July is better than June

As June turns into July, there are absolutes to the cadance of every baseball season. The Red Sox will be one of the best teams–Tuesday night notwithstanding…holy Dewey Evans!–another ‘roider will roll up on a heckler, and the Cubs will be making news for every other reason except for winning a World Series. Can someone get Ron Santo a Mars bar, please?

Just completing a 12-14 month, the Cubs enter July with a laundry list of ailments not even Michael Jackson’s doctor could prescribe medication for. I am not a, ahem, licensed physician trained to protect the best interests of my patients. No, I am a blogger, trained to spout off on sports topics rattling around in my brain. Today, it’s what ills the Cubs. Here are 5 ideas that if implemented, can get the Cubs back on track-

1. Aramis Ramirez chops wood like Joe Mauer. Great piece by Tom Verducci in last week’s Sports Illustrated on Twins catcher Joe Mauer. It appears Mauer’s therapy from baseball life is simple– retreating to a log cabin in the upper woods of Minnesota, riding a tractor and listening to hooting owls at night. Missing the first month of the season, Mauer is hitting over .400 since May. Now, I would be stunned of A-Ram spends his downtime sniffing the morning scent of freshly cut grass, but if helps him come off the DL firing, hand him an axe.

2. Jeff Samardijza finds an out pitch. Just back from his Des Moines exile, the bonus baby was supposed to be working on a 3rd pitch to compliment a fastball and change up. If he can get guys out this time up, he becomes a 7th inning option, or if Carlos Marmol continues to struggle, an 8th inning guy. Either way, taking endess bus trips through back roads in Iowa vs sleeping in luxury hotels should motivate Samardijza to figure it out.

3. Milton Bradley hits like Milton Bradley. You know I had to get a Bradley reference in this post, for no other reason than SEO. His keyword is killing it right now on Google! Honestly, Bradley’s lifetime numbers are worthy of the $10 million per year contract the Cubs gave him–.370 OBP, .452 SLG, .821 OPS. I perfect number two guy once A-Ram comes back. Bradley’s clubhouse confrontation with Lou Pinella may be a blessing, if it means his teammates will start paying attention to the mercurial, moody guy. If it makes him hit better, Soriano should take him out to Cold Stone Creamery after every home game, where they can look deeply into each other’s eyes and talk about life, loves and, well, what else is there?

4. Starting pitching doesn’t need to get better, just deeper. Although the Cubs starters are amongst the best in MLB in terms of quality starts, this is deceiving. Quality starts if one of the biggest crock stats in the game, drummed up by entrepreneurial agents like Scott Boras to get fatter contracts for clients. Ryan Dempster goes 6 innings, gives up 7 hits and 3 earned runs. This is considered quality? Yes, in the mediocrity soaked world of professional sports. It’s not the 7 hits or 3 runs that are the problem, but the 6 innings. An extra inning thrown consistenly by Cubs starters means less exposure to the abyss that is their bullpen. Eventually someone from the Marmol, Samardijza, Guzman mix will rise up and seize the 8th inning. The more often they have a lead to protect in the 8th, the more margin for error they give to Kevin Gregg, who can be effective when handed a 2 or 3-run save opportunity in the 9th.

5. This is more of a suggestion for fans–dieting. If you can’t stomach what you’re watching, then take the lead from one Cubs fan and eat less.

These are obviously not sure-fire cures. Although the Cubs are having a bad month, they aren’t suffering as much as this ball boy:

I would rather see Roger Federer go for his 15th major title against an upstart U.K. tennis superstar than see the same challenge against last year’s champion Rafael Nadal, the stringy-haired Spaniard so adamantly declared Fed’s rival.

Murray has the same charisma and defiant style that Nadal has, but has an entire nation backing him. Imagine that final? It would be like Tiger Woods attempting to break Jack Nicklaus’ major record at the Masters with a crowd made up of just the Golden Bear’s supporters.

Read up on Murray’s backstory then factor in the last time someone from the European island brought home a Wimbledon title (1936) and you have a bonafide, once-in-a-lifetime sports moment.

LSU captured their sixth national championship and first under Skip Bertman replacement Paul Mainieri, while the Tigers’ football coach looked on from the stands at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The 11-4 victory over the Texas Longhorns capped an exciting CWS, as usual, but this time the prestige of two storied programs took center stage, per NCAA.com.

The past three years have seen surprising champions Oregon State (back-to-back) and Fresno State knock the national seeds from the pages of history, but this year the sport’s Goliaths pushed back and reclaimed the throne.

LSU rightfielder Jared Mitchell– a first-round pick of the Chicago White Sox and wide-receiver on the LSU football team– got the Tigers off to a good start with a three-run homer in the first inning.

Texas responded later to tie the game, but a five-run sixth inning by LSU sealed the Longhorns’ fate, sending Baton Rouge into hysteria:

Things would be ok, however, because the U.S. would lose Wednesday to the No. 1 Spanish team and everything in the soccer world would go back to normal.

Far from it.

The Americans, outshot 29-9 in the match, recorded a stunning 2-nil victory in South Africa to advance to the finals against the winner of Brazil and host South Africa, per ESPN.com.

Jozy Altidore, who plays for Spanish club team Villareal, scored in the 25th minute– dodging one of his Villareal teammates in the process– to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Russell Moldenhauer came into the College World Series with no homeruns. The designated hitter connected for a homerun in a three-run third inning for Texas. It was Moldenhauer’s fourth homerun of the tournament, tieing a CWS-record.

The all too familiar “back, back, back, back…” would still be resonating in ears from Omaha across the country with the amount of homeruns hit during Game 1 of the best-of-three series.

In the end, it was a ninth-inning rally that saved the post-season undefeated Tigers (55-16) before capping off the comeback with a run in the top of the 11th inning, felling the Longhorns 7-6 in in front of 23,000 souvenir-happy fans, per NCAA.com.

With a 6-4 Texas lead and two outs in the ninth inning, LSU got a clutch two-run double from D.J. LeMahieu to tie the score, setting up the extra inning theatrics. With one more win Tigers’ coach Paul Manieri will get his first national championship in replacement of legendary coach Skip Bertman.

After loading the bases in the top of the 10th and not pushing a run across, the Tigers got a single with two outs from Mikie Mahtook, scoring the winning run from second. Closer Matty Ott recorded his school-record 16th save to finish off the ‘Horns in the bottom of the 11th.

Russell Moldenhauer had two homers for a Texas team that knows they let a win slip away and must now win Tuesday and Wednesday night to snatch the title away from LSU.
