Swine flu confirmed in Ghana

Per AfricaNews: Health services in Ghana have switched on their surveillance systems as the West African country records its first H1N1 (swine flu) case since its outbreak. The Ghana Health Service confirmed two cases on Thursday. One is in the capital Accra and the other in the Western region bordering Ivory Coast.

Obama pledges $63 billion to fight diseases in Africa

Per AfricaNews: United States President Barack Obama has pledged $63 billion to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and polio on the African continent. Speaking during his weekend visit to Ghana in West Africa, he said: “We will fight neglected tropical diseases. And we won’t confront illnesses in isolation.”

Per BBC: Meanwhile, the US President has said Africa must take charge of its own destiny in the world. He said that good governance was vital for development.

Obama lands in Ghana

Per AfricaNews: “Ghanaians are proud to be the first people in Sub-Sahara Africa to host revered US President Barack Obama. He lands on the shores of the former Gold Coast on Friday evening.”

Accra, the capital is awash with giant billboards of smiling Obama and a lot of paraphernalia ranging from T-shirts, umbrellas, wrist bands, cloths and caps selling along the street. Ghanaians are planning a mammoth and thunderous welcome for the US president right from the Kotoka International Airport to the principal streets, per the article.

Controversy brewing in Africa over Obama’s Ghana visit

Per AfricaNews: US President Barack Obama’s decision to visit Ghana over other African countries is causing political brouhaha on the continent. Citizens of populous Black African country – Nigeria – are not enthused about the news and are blaming their government of poor governance that has put Obama away. Renowned Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has waded in what has now become known as ‘war of words’. He said Obama’s choice of Ghana is a wise decision: “If Obama decides to grace Nigeria with his presence, I will stone him. The message he is sending by going to Ghana is so obvious, is so brilliant that he must not render it flawed by coming to Nigeria any time soon”. Obama to visit West Africa’s Ghana

Per Africanews, U.S. President Barack Obama is scheduled to embark on a two-day state visit to the West African country of Ghana in July. His wife, Michelle Obama and other high ranking government officials are expected to accompany him. Obama and his delegation will also visit the Cape Coast Castle – an epitome of the slave era – in the central region of Ghana.

A statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the country said Obama is due from 10 – 11 July, 2009. “During his visit, President Obama will hold bilateral talks with his Ghanaian counterpart, President John Evans Atta Mills, aimed at strengthening the fraternal relations existing between the two countries,” the statement said.

Ghana celebrates Independence Day

Per Voice of America, the Republic of Ghana is celebrating its 52nd anniversary of its independence from British rule Friday.

In 1957, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan country to free itself from colonial rule. It is known as the “Black Star” of Africa and has been holding democratic elections since 1992. Day-long festivities are planned, including a national parade to be attended by President John Evans Atta Mills.
