Report: Mir Hossein Mousavi assassination attempt foiled

An attempt on the life of Mir Hossein Mousavi has been foiled in Iran, according to a report by PRESS TV Sunday night. A terrorist organization that trained in Iraq was supposedly behind the plot and sought to pin the incident on the Iranian government to cause chaos.

Mousavi was the main opposition candidate of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in June’s disputed Iranian presidential election. PRESS TV reports that the terrorist group Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization also planned to assassinate another reform candidate, Mehdi Karroubi.

The Twitterverse shared its views on the implications of such an event and voiced skepticism about who was behind the plot.

Iran Supreme Leader aide claims Mousavi is U.S. Agent

Hossein Shariatmadari, an aide to Supreme Iran Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, claims that Mir Hossein Mousavi is a U.S. Agent, per the Associated Press.

According to Shariatmadari, there are “undeniable documents” proving that Mousavi is acting with instructions from the U.S. Government and committing crimes against Iran.

But Twitterers are finding this claim hard to believe.

Mousavi, Karroubi, Khatami remain defiant despite warnings

Despite rising threats against opposition leaders, including arrest or other forms of punishment, the reformist candidates who finished behind Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Iran’s presidential election continue to speak out against the election results.

On Wednesday, according to AFP and Independent.ie:

Mir Hossein Mousavi renewed his demand for a re-vote, something Iran’s highest legislative body the Guardian Council has said will not happen. He also called for freedom of assembly and freedom of speech.
Mehdi Karroubi had his newspaper, Etemad Melli, shut down after he called the election results invalid and Ahmadinejad’s presidency illegitimate.
Ayatollah Mohammed Khatami, former president of Iran, also spoke out against the election results
